In training, safety comes first. Respect and common sense work best.

GENERAL SAFETY RULES

1. If you think something is wrong, in any way that might be dangerous at all, yell "Halt" or "Break".

2. Stop moving instantly if you hear the word "Halt" or "Break", or if your opponent retreats and waves the unarmed hand or gives any sign of wanting to stop like tapping you with their hand.

3. The weapons are to be treated with respect and awareness at all times. - Weapons must be carried with the point controlled at all times - A weapon is only pointed at another person when that person is fully masked and ready to spar or drill - Never leave your weapon laying around so it can fall down or be tripped over - Fencers must always be masked when weapons are raised point forward

4. Inspect weapons and masks each time you use them. If you are using club gear and find any problem please report it to a senior member. Do not put the item in question back into club storage without reporting it. Do not fix club gear yourself without asking advice or permission. Do not use unsafe gear.

5. Always ensure you have a proper level of insurance against injury when practicing fencing. Sport-insurances normally do not cover fencing so contact your own insurance company to get a quote.

6. If you have your own gear, you are responsible for keeping the weapon safe, including removing burrs or edges from the blade

7. If you do not have your own gear and borrow someone else's, ask their approval first. By borrowing their gear you agree to pay for it if it breaks. VaMi loaner gear breakage is the association's responsibility and is covered by the equipment fees. Do not use any gear that is not marked “VaMi” unless you are 100% sure it is not someone’s personal gear or you have asked approval.

8. Wear proper shoes for fencing. Please make sure that the shoes are clean and do not leave marks on the floor.

9. No drill or match is to be started until both sides have saluted the other to indicate they are ready.

SPARRING SAFETY RULES

10. Mask, jacket, neckguard and gloves must always be worn when sparring. For full-speed sparring, full gear must be used. Light gloves can only be used for light sparring with Nylon swords.

11. Sparring is done voluntarily and is not mandatory. Anyone being asked to spar can say no without having to give a reason.

12. No sparring match is to be started without the participants having agreed on a level of speed/power. This should be dependent both on participant wishes as well as on the gear in use.

13. Limitations on sparring: - Never hit the opponent on the back of the head. - Never turn your back on your opponent while sparring. If the judge calls "Halt", retreat out of distance before turning around. - Throwing the opponent is not allowed. Lifting the opponent off the ground is allowed, and counts as a throw. - Kicks to the knee or groin are not allowed. - Fencers must control parries and attacks so that the opponent is not intentionally injured.

14. Fencers on the floor have right of way. People not sparring are obligated to keep themselves and their gear off the sparring area for everyone's safety.

15. Always check in advance so that you know where the first aid kit is in case it is needed.
